Undercast exhibition

Opening night was a success with the gallery bursting at the gunnels with people. In the first week we have sold $1000.00 of items. Which is great considering half of the things we have are not for sale. In other ways the exhibition has been a success. Rent and advertising will be covered by exhibition fees, the gallery looks great http://undercast2009.blogspot.com/ students in different stages of completion of their studies worked together to make this happen, the relationship with Maureen Cahill and the Glass studio has been revitalized. It looks very much like this co-operation will continue into 2010.

We dream of flying but we are genetically earth bound. To appropriate the gifts of flight we create idols to worship that are both animal and human – angels, Horus etc. In creating these ill-made idols ( they have one wing or only a hump where wings might grow) that cannot fly and cannot see or speak I am suggesting that our desire sits on us like a deformity but never the less the struggle of desire ennobles us and drives us on.

I have been playing around with ideas of power and powerlessness. I started with the idea of the power that is conferred with taking on attributes of animals... like shamanic ideas of taking on the "power" of an animal or like egyptian gods. However though humanity aspires to godhood we are ill-formed and like Icarus we fail. Thus, these statues have wings that are partly formed, no arms or arms but a hump on their backs or only one wing and one arm. This is the first version. Watch out for more.

Allelopathy - meaning the ability of a plant to alter the environment surrounding it to nurture or to poison. I'm thinking of appropriating this idea - to describe the influence of individuals and ideas - "social allelopathy".
